In recent years, semi-permanent makeup has become one of the most popular aesthetic practices within the beauty world. A quick google-search on the phrase ‘semi-permanent makeup’ boasts a whopping 40,100,000 results and if you put #semipermanantmakeup, #permanantmakeup, #micropigmentation or #microblading into your Instagram search box, you will be met with a plethora of pictures showing beautiful brows, lips, eyeliner and more.
But what exactly is semi-permanent makeup? In short, semi-permanent makeup is an aesthetic treatment whereby a trained technician will insert a long-lasting pigment into your skin in order to create the appearance of makeup without you having to spend hours on it every day. Semi-Permanent makeup not only eliminates the hassle of applying makeup but is also designed to offer much more natural results than those you can obtain yourself. Rather than the harsh look that can sometimes results from an eyebrow or eyeliner pencil, semi-permanent makeup has been designed to create a more natural, soft and feathery look. And if you choose the right artist, semi-permanent makeup can look unbelievably beautiful and completely realistic.
What are the different types of semi-permanent makeup and where can I get it done?
Lashes and Eyeliner
Eyeliner tattooing is one of the most popular semi-permanent makeup techniques. The procedure involves injecting a dark-coloured pigment onto the eyelid that mimics the appearance of your everyday liner. Traditionally, semi-permanent eyeliner procedures have focused on creating a winged look or a more subtle line of pigment where you would normally apply your eyeliner. More recently, however, semi-permanent eyeliner has also been applied in a way to make the lash line look fuller and darker. The procedure involves using a gentle tattoo machine to insert tiny drops of pigment between each lash, effectively making the entire area look more defined.
Eyebrows are one of the most defining features of a person’s face and have been the focus of most people’s beauty regimes for centuries. Whilst drawing on the perfect eyebrow used to take hours, the introduction of semi-permanent makeup (also known as microblading or micropigmentation) has completely eliminated that timely procedure. Now, thousands of clinics offer bespoke treatments for those wanting to boast beautiful brows from the moment they wake up. Microblading and micropigmentation treatments inject a coloured pigment into the skin, mimicking the natural structure of the brow to create a more subtle and realistic effect. Women from all over the world dream of having plump, luscious and pink lips. Whilst a lot of people opt for lip filler injections to achieve such a look, semi-permanent makeup is another technique used to create the perfect pout. There are several different application techniques for semi-permanent lip liner including the ‘lip-blush’ technique and the micropigmentation method. However, most techniques involve inserting a pink pigment onto the lips in order to create a naturally pretty pout.
Is getting semi-permanent makeup painful?
One of the main factors that might put people off a semi-permanent makeup procedure is the worry that it could be very painful. Despite being a strand of tattoo art, semi-permanent makeup really isn’t as painful as you might think! Most practitioners apply a prescribed numbing cream to the area before the procedure begins in order to ease the pain. Once the numbing cream has worked its magic, the whole experience should be almost pain-free. Sounds good, right?!
However, you must remember that everybody reacts to semi-permanent makeup procedures differently. Some people might find the whole experience completely pain-free. Others with a lower pain threshold could be a lot more uncomfortable. It completely depends on the individual and how their body reacts to pain.
How long does semi-permanent makeup last?
The lifespan of semi-permanent makeup is completely different for each individual and its lasting impact can be affected by several different variables. These include:
- The texture and type of your skin.
- Exposure to sunlight.
- Exposure to water.
- Facial products.
- Smoking habits.
- How much alcohol you consume.
- Specific medications.
In general, most semi-permanent makeup procedures can last for up to eighteen months without the client needing a colour boost. However, some people’s results could last up to ten years! When the results start to fade, you can contact your technician for a top-up appointment in order to maintain the desired effect.
What are the side effects of having a semi-permanent makeup procedure?
Generally, the risks associated with undergoing a semi-permanent makeup procedure are minimal and these will be explained to you by your practitioner. Most issues experienced post-procedure can also be easily rectified by your technician. However there a few risks and side-effects that you should consider before booking in for a semi-permanent makeup procedure. These include:
- Disappointing results. Not every technician offering semi-permanent makeup has been trained to the highest standard and results can sometimes be unacceptable. Do your research before booking any semi-permanent makeup procedure! And remember, the cheapest option is usually never the best option.
- Risk of injected.
- A skin reaction, such as swelling, cracking, peeling or blistering.
- Lumps and bumps on the skin.
- An allergic reaction to the pigment. However, every technician should send you a patch test before your procedure so you can avoid having any painful and damaging reactions to the product.
If you experience any of these issues, you should contact your aesthetic practitioner immediately in order to find a suitable solution. If you are unable to contact your technician, contact your GP for medical advice on how to best deal with the situation.
