Cupid’s Bow Dermal Filler

Cupid’s Bow Dermal Filler

Every day, hundreds of people consider undergoing lip enhancement surgery. Whilst many decide to take the plunge and book a lip filler appointment, others fear that this kind of procedure could go disastrously wrong and choose not to go down the filler route. Of course, these fears are completely understandable. Getting lip fillers can be an invasive procedure and there have been some horrendous results produced over the years. So many, in fact, that when you google ‘lip filler fails’ a whopping four million results pop up including some gruesome pictures of overfilled and unnatural-looking lips. Many of these ‘fails’ occur because, in years gone by, surgeons would pump actual silicone (the material often used to bond concrete and glass together) into their patients’ lips in order to make them bigger. Whilst the days of using silicone filler are gone (thank heavens), and most practitioners now inject a natural substance called Hyaluronic Acid into the lip area, ending up with the dreaded ‘duck pout’ still remains a real fear to those considering getting lip fillers.

However, fear not my friends! There is now a very specific type of procedure that you can book in for which will add definition and structure to your lips, making them appear shapely and luscious rather than swollen and unnatural. This method, which advocates the opinion that quality is always better than quantity, is called the ‘Cupid’s Bow’ or ‘Russian Lip’ technique. This type of procedure focuses on injecting filler into the v-shaped area of the mouth (popularly known as the Cupid’s Bow).  The aim of this type of treatment is to enhance the peak of the lips to subtly improve the appearance of the area. The Cupid’s Bow technique focuses on shape rather than size and a skilled practitioner can draw on this method to create full and defined lips. If you are interested in learning more about the Cupid’s Bow technique, read on to find out what to expect before, during and after a procedure.

Pre-Treatment

Every practitioner should have an in-depth discussion with their patient before the procedure in order to determine the aesthetic goals the patient hopes to achieve and, more importantly, to discuss any existing or previous medical conditions that could cause any complications during or after lip enhancement surgery. The aesthetic artist should let their patient know that getting lip fillers is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Every patient is different and what might look good on one person could look terrible on somebody else! The pre-treatment consultation should therefore run through all the different options available to the client.  The consultation should give both the practitioner and the patient a clear vision of what sort of results will realistically be obtained by the end of the aesthetic procedure.

Treatment

Some patients might have an under-defined but still present Cupid’s Bow or, in the case of some older patients, might have once have a defined and voluminous pair of lips but have experienced a loss of shape and plumpness in the top lip due to ageing. Others, however, might not have a bow at all and have made the decision to meet with an aesthetic practitioner with the hope of creating an entirely new-looking set of lips. When dealing with the first type of patient mentioned, the procedure should be fairly simple. All the practitioner needs to do is inject a moderate amount of Hyaluronic Acid filler into the lip area which will immediately add volume to the lips and create a more obvious bow shape. For those who have never had a natural Cupid’s Bow and want to construct one, then the process is more difficult and may require several sessions before the desired results can be achieved.

Every aesthetic practitioner will use a different technique when trying to create and/or define a Cupid’s Bow and should explain exactly how they will perform the procedure before they start any form of treatment. However, one of the most popular and standard techniques used by a large number of aesthetic artists is to inject small amounts of Hyaluronic Acid filler along the border of the lip (mimicking where people usually apply their lip liner) to sculpt and define the outline of the lip area, with special focus on the Cupid’s Bow. After the outline of the lips have been treated and the patient is pleased with the shape that has been built, then a moderate amount of filler can be added to the body of the lips to create a fuller pout.

When treating the cupid’s bow, the practitioner should focus on both the upper and lower lip. Whilst the primary focus of filler administration will be on the top lip (in order to create the perfect cupid’s bow), the patient should be aware that the bottom lip will also be treated to achieve greater symmetry and create an overall natural appearance to the mouth area.

Philthrum Columns

Another area that an aesthetic practitioner might focus on in order to create a perfect pair of lips is the space above the top lip (from the nostrils to the top of the Cupid Bow peak) called the phillithrum columns. When the philthrum columns are enhanced using hyaluronic acid filler, it can help give the entire mouth area a more youthful and plump appearance. Focusing on the philthrum columns can also help draw attention to the shape of the top lip and make it appear more lifted, complimenting the shape of the cupid’s bow.

Post-Procedure

The results from a Cupid’s Bow procedure can last for up to twelve months. If a patient feels like the results have not lasted for as long as desired, they can visit their practitioner at any point for a ‘top-up’ session. At the same time, if a patient is unsatisfied with the results, lip fillers are easy to dissolve by a trained technician with a detailed knowledge of lip anatomy. The treatment involves little down time and swelling often goes disappears fully after 72 hours.
