Cheek Filler: Everything you Need to Know.

Whilst in years gone by having ‘work done’ was a massive decision to make, in today’s world enhancing our bodily features has never been easier. Indeed, Lip Fillers have become one of the most popular aesthetic practices in both the UK and the US. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/News/Statistics/2018/plastic-surgery-statistics-report-2018.pdf) , in 2018 over 30,000 people underwent lip augmentation in the US alone! As filler procedures have become more popular, the areas that you can target with these products have also grown. Whilst you may not know it, dermal filler can be used to enhance areas such as the cheeks, the jawline, the chin area and more. Whilst we could talk forever about all types of dermal filler, this article is going to focus specifically on Cheek Filler. Cheeks and Cheekbones are generally the most defining features of somebody’s face. How many times have you heard the phrase ‘they have the most amazing cheekbones?’. Hundreds I bet. And with the defined cheekbones of people like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Kate Moss saturating our social media pages, who would blame you for wanting to make yours more voluminous?  Read on to find out everything you need to know about Cheek Filler, from what it is to how to look after your new cheeks post-procedure.

So what actually is Cheek Filler?

The question on most people’s lips is ‘what is Cheek Filler’? And ‘how does Cheek Filler work’? Put simply, cheek filler procedures inject Hyaluronic Acid dermal filler in order to lift, enhance and plump a patient’s cheeks and cheekbone area. Whilst Hyaluronic Acid might sound like a scary ingredient, it is actually an amazing product produced naturally by the human body. Hyaluronic Acid can be found in loads of our everyday beauty products, including moisturisers, face firming cream and anti-ageing products. With Hyaluronic Acid filler, Cheek Filler procedures can be tailored to each individual patient’s wants and needs. You could ask your technician for a more angular look or you could just opt for an added firmness and plumpness in order to maintain a youthful appearance.

What can you expect during a Cheek Filler procedure?

Whilst each technician does things their own way, there are a few basic steps that you should expect from any Cheek Filler Procedure. Firstly, you should have a detailed consultation with your technician in order to discuss any medical issues you have and for both of you to understand exactly what kind of look you want to achieve. Some, but not all, technicians will apply numbing cream to the area they are working on in order to reduce any pain experienced by the patient. After the consultation has finished and any product has been applied to the face, your technician will get under way with the procedure. This involves zero work from your side, you just need to lie back and let the practitioner do their work. The dermal filler injections will be injected in both sides of the face, with more filler being put into the areas you have asked to be targeted. Depending on the technique of your technician and the amount of filler you have decided to have injected, the whole procedure can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.  Initially after the procedure, you may experience slight swelling, redness and bruising but this should subside within a few days.

Are Cheek Fillers Painful?

One of the biggest factors that can put people off undergoing a cheek filler procedure is the worry that it might really hurt. The question ‘is Cheek Filler painful?’, however, is not an easy one to answer. Everybody reacts to events differently and having filler injected into your face is no different! For some, there is absolutely no pain experienced at all. For others who are more sensitive to pain, they may experience more discomfort. Most filler products, however, are infused with a product called Lidocaine which helps to create a smooth procedure and to reduce the pain of any filler procedure.

How long does cheek filler last and how often do I need to get injections?

Depending on the individual patient and the specific filler product used, the lifespan of Cheek Fillers can vary. However, Hyaluronic Acid is an ingredient designed to produce long-lasting results and you can expect to still see the effects of your filler for up to 12 months. When you begin to see the results fade, you can normally contact your technician to have a “booster” filler which can help to maintain the desired effect. One of the most amazing features of Hyaluronic Acid is that it is not permanent and can be easily dissolved by a certified and trained practitioner. So, if you have a bad experience, the results will not last forever, and you can contact a professional injector in order to rectify the situation. Sounds good right?!

How much does Cheek Filler Cost?

On average, a cheek filler procedure will cost around £350-£400. Of course, prices will always vary depending on where you visit but this is usually the kind of money you will be looking at. And remember, the cheapest option is usually never the best option!  Paying a little bit more for your first procedure is definitely a better option than having to fork out a load of money later down the line for corrective work.

What are the risks of a Cheek Filler procedure?

Because most injectors used Hyaluronic Acid filler which is a natural substance, the likelihood of having a bad reaction to Cheek Filler is very small. Usual side-effects include redness, swelling and bruising of the area initially after the procedure. These side effects usually subside after a few days. However, there have been a few recorded incidents of more severe reactions to Cheek Filler injections. These have been:

  • Acne-like skin eruptions
  • Unsymmetrical results
  • Damaged skin that has caused more serious wounds or scarring
  • Infection of the injected area
  • Lumps and Bumps
  • Itchy skin rash
  • Vascular Occlusion (leading to tissue necrosis)

You will be made aware of these risks before having your procedure and will have the opportunity to cancel your appointment. If you experience any of these side-effects after having undergone a cheek filler procedure, you must contact both your technician and GP immediately.

How can I look after my Cheek Filler?

Most of the aftercare required to look after your beautiful new cheeks involves just sitting back and waiting for them to heal on their own. However, most people do experience some level of bruising or swelling after their procedure. Here are few handy tips that can help speed up the recovery process!

  • Use a hot compress. Soak a clean cloth in very hot water before wringing it out to get rid of any excess and/or dripping water. Lay the cloth over the face so that the heat and steam can access the injected area. Repeat this action several times, ideally every two hours.
  • Apply Arnica cream and/or aloe vera gel. You can buy both of these products at most local pharmacists. Applying them to the affected area can help with inflammation. Apply generously!

There are few other things to avoid immediately after your procedure and during the following days that will make sure your cheeks look perfect:

  • Make sure you drink a lot of water and keep your sugar levels high (which can involve eating lots of choccy…oops) immediately after your procedure and during the first couple of days following the treatment.
  • Avoid touching the treated area for at least six hours after the procedure.
  • Sleep on your back the night of your procedure to avoid affecting the healing process.
  • Do not expose the affected area to intense heat (for example, sunbeds or sunbathing) or extreme cold for at least a week.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for at least a week in order to avoid the risk of getting any form of infection.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least two days after the procedure as drinking too much can increase the possibility of bruising and swelling.
